The best URL shorteners and how to choose yours

A trophy representing the best URL shortener

Every time someone asks me which is the best URL shortener, I answer with another question: best for what? Because wanting to share four links a month is not the same as managing a whole brand's campaigns. The good news is that, knowing what to look at, getting it right is fairly easy.

Instead of handing you a ranking that will be outdated in six months, I would rather give you the criteria that truly matter. With them you will be able to judge any tool, today's and the one two years from now, without being dazzled by features you will never use.

What makes a shortener good

A good shortener is not the one with the most buttons, but the one that does the essentials well and puts no obstacles in your way. Underneath it all there are three things that should never be missing: a clean, permanent redirect, the ability to measure clicks in detail, and links that do not expire without warning. The rest are extras, valuable but secondary. If a tool fails on these three pillars, it does not matter how pretty it is: it will give you headaches.

The two big types of shortener

Before comparing names, it helps to understand that there are two very different families, and the choice between them shapes almost everything else:

  • Online services: you sign up and start in a minute. Convenient, but your data lives on their platform and the good stuff is usually paid.
  • Self-hosted shorteners: you install them on your server. They need a small initial step, but the links and stats are yours, with no fees or artificial limits.

Neither is better in the abstract. If you just want to shorten the odd link, an online service is plenty. If you are going to use it seriously or care about privacy, the self-hosted one plays in another league. I compare both approaches in this article on Bitly alternatives.

What to look at before deciding

This is the checklist I run through whenever I try a new tool. If an option meets most of it, you are on the right track:

  • Your own domain: the link should carry your brand (yourdomain.com/promo), not the service's.
  • Real statistics: clicks by country, device, browser and source, not just a total number.
  • Unlimited links and clicks: so they do not cut you off right when things start working.
  • Who owns the data: it is worth knowing where your links are stored and who else can see them.
  • Useful extras: QR codes, expiring links, campaign parameters or an API to automate.

Free, paid... or yours

The pricing model is where there are most surprises. Almost all popular services run on the free plan hook: you start without paying, you get hooked, and when you need your domain or more stats, the monthly fee appears. It is not a trick, it is their business; but it is worth knowing before you build your whole operation on top of something that may rise in price tomorrow.

The third way, the one many discover late, is having your own shortener. You pay for your hosting (which you probably already have for other things) and the per-link fees are gone. In exchange, you take on an initial setup that today is almost trivial.

Which one suits what you do?

To make this concrete, think about your case. If you are an individual user who shares links now and then, any free online service will do; do not overthink it. If you are a content creator and live off people clicking your links, you will want your own domain and good stats, so moving to a serious tool starts to pay off.

If you run a shop or a small business, links are part of your campaigns and you care about measuring, segmenting and not depending on a third party: self-hosted fits like a glove. And if you work at an agency or a team, you add the need to manage several users and clients, where having full control of the platform stops being a luxury and becomes peace of mind.

If you want full control: your own shortener

This is where Linsei fits. It is free, you install it on your server and it brings together what we asked for in the list above: your own domain, full statistics, unlimited links, QR codes, expiry, an API and an add-on system to extend it. And since it lives on your hosting, the data never leaves it.

Before choosing, run a quick test: shorten a link, look at its stats and check whether you can use your domain without paying. In five minutes you will know if the tool is for you.

Do not be swayed by the longest feature list. The best shortener is the one that covers what you need today, lets you grow without scares and does not force you to rent your own links. If that means setting up your own, you can see everything Linsei includes and decide with full knowledge.
