Sharing a link and never looking at what happens to it is like throwing messages in bottles into the sea: maybe they reach somewhere, but you never find out. Measuring clicks is what turns a link into information, and information into better decisions. And no, you do not need to be an analyst to make the most of it.
I will tell you what can be measured, which metrics the people who know really watch, and how to read them without drowning in a sea of numbers.
What you can measure about a short link
Every time someone clicks your link, quite a bit more than a simple total can be recorded. With a good shortener you have access to things like these:
- Total and unique clicks: how many times it was clicked and how many different people did so.
- Country and city: where your visitors come from, thanks to geolocation.
- Device and browser: whether they arrive from mobile or desktop, and with which program.
- Traffic source: which website, social network or app sent each visitor.
- Evolution over time: how clicks spread across days, weeks or months.
The metrics that really matter
With so much data it is easy to get lost, so it pays to prioritise. Unique clicks tell you your real reach, without being inflated by someone who clicks twice. The source is perhaps the most profitable metric: it tells you which channel works, so you stop watering where nothing grows. And the device warns you of practical details, like the fact that if almost everyone arrives from mobile, your destination page had better look good on a small screen.
Do not chase the biggest number. A link with 50 well-targeted clicks is worth more than one with 5,000 that lead nowhere. Click quality beats quantity almost every time.
From data to decisions
Measuring is only worth it if you then do something with it. If you see one channel bringing almost all your clicks, give it more care. If an unexpected country shows up at the top, you may have an audience you did not know you had. If visits collapse after a strong start, it is a sign to refresh the content or the place where you share it. The numbers do not decide for you, but they take off the blindfold.
For all this you need a shortener that records and shows this data clearly, ideally with charts. It is exactly one of the things Linsei does out of the box: each link has its panel with clicks, countries, devices and evolution, without paying extra or depending on anyone. And if you are still not sure how to start creating those links, I cover it in the guide to shortening your first URL.
So next time you share a link, do not drop it and forget. Come back to it in a few days: you will be surprised how much a handful of clicks has to tell you.
